Roots Through Stone: A Fall Reflection on Resilience

Hi friends,
As the seasons shift and the air sharpens, I’ve been thinking about how resilience often mirrors the earth beneath us, even when life feels like rock and ruin, something within us keeps growing—quietly, persistently—like roots pushing through stone.
That’s the heart of my poem “Roots Through Stone,” from my collection The Shape of Healing. I recently recorded a new reading of it, and it reminded me how healing doesn’t always look like blooming. Sometimes it’s just surviving the season and trusting that strength is forming beneath the surface.
Writing has been a grounding space for me this fall. I’ve been reflecting, slowing down, and preparing for the upcoming appearances, where I can finally share these books, poems, and stories in person. (If you’re in Wyoming, I’ll be in Wright on November 16!)
As you move through this changing season, I hope you find a little stillness of your own. May your roots hold steady, even when the ground shifts.
